Angry Birds 2 Official Launch Trailer – Deconstructed
Angry Birds 2 was released today on Android and iOS, just 5 years and 7 months after the first one became a hit. And they launched it with this Official Launch Trailer.
The Official Launch Trailer for Angry Birds 2 features live action video footage / mixed with hyper-realistic CGI.
Odd for one of the few really popular mobile games that is still hand drawn 2d animation.
Pigs (normal pink not green) hanging out on Piggy island; playing frisbee, standing in the shallows, swimming (wait a second, pigs don’t float – at least not according to the Angry Bird’s canon), and sunbathing on a hammock.
When all of a sudden one of the pigs spies something through the ol’ binoculars. The pig-nosed alarms start to sound and the pigs are in high alert. Some of the pigs are wearing Army Helmets, we are watching a war begin, a surprise attack of an island of soldiers caught napping, and relaxing. I feel like this whole trailer is an homage to that great scene in Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan where they storm Omaha Beach.
The pigs immediately begin getting bombarded from the sky by birds (let’s assume they are birds, as we can’t tell for sure). These so called Angry Birds apparently trailing plumes of colored smoke behind them, kamikaze themselves into boxes of TNT and head first into wooden piers.
They are completely shrouded in smoke to the point that we can’t make out which birds are which beyond their distinctive colors and a few yips and caws.
This scene was very out of character for Angry Birds, and reminded me of something SUPERCELL would have storyboarded for a BOOM BEACH trailer.
When the birds hit the water, they splash down as Rubber Duckies?! And contrary to every rubber ducky I’ve ever seen…they sink. This is just like the bullets ripping through the water in Saving Private Ryan.
Although in the movie (and in real life WWII) the attacking army didn’t catch the opposing army off guard. If you remember, they got ground up for a while before eventually succeeding. This bird vs. pig bombardment is a pork slaughter from the moment Jay, Jake, and Jim (the blue birds) rocket into the TNT on the pier.
Eventually they go after the king pig, who is gluttonously in a state of deep REM sleep just behind a pile of eggs (which he presumably stole from the birds), and two painted & framed portraits of himself, all surrounded by TNT.
He is hit by a bird so apparently destructive, or he is surrounded by SOOOO much TNT, that the bird’s impact causes an explosion so massive it rocks the island into a pink plume reminiscent of an atomic mushroom cloud, which forms the shape of a colossal number two. Yeah, not gonna be much left of those eggs.
All in all a very weird and unpredictable Official Trailer featuring 1:04 of CGI and 4 – 8 seconds of full screen gameplay (at the very end).
This is how it would look if the trailer didn’t have the CGI scenes. I guess Rovio didn’t want to give any spoilers away, and just want you to download the game to experience all the new birds and features for yourself…don’t worry, we will.
