All Your BTTF II Fantasies Of Riding A Hoverboard Have Come True…Sort Of

Lexus’ SLIDE was recently unveiled to much critical attention. It’s a hybrid car hoverboard (…yes a hoverboard) Lexus designed (perhaps uncoincidentally) just in time for Marty McFly’s 2015 Delorean trip to the future, as seen Back To The Future II. The actual date of Marty’s touchdown and run-in with Griff at the 80s cafe that spurred cinema’s first ever hoverboard chase sequence was October 21, 2015.

I guess you could say SLIDE is a prototype of an actual functioning hoverboard, which by functioning one would have to have access to a liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors, and would be able to construct a custom track with magnets that the board can hover over.

Marty could ride his pink hoverboard  on gravel. He could take it around sharp curves. He could hover inches or sometimes feet off the ground. He could even take it out on the open roads.

About the only thing this SLIDE can do that Marty’s hoverboard can’t do is run on water.

Sam Sheffer from THE VERGE, got to test out the hoverboard on a specially build Lexus skatepark in Spain. The results were less then stellar.

Read Sam’s account of the experience HERE, he breaks it down for the gimmick it is. An actually “functioning” slightly levitating platform, for Lexus to springboard their brand into the future.
